27 was founded in Boston in 1997 and is a trio consisting of female singer Maria Christopher and the two musicians Ayal Naor and Neil Coulon. Their sound is quite unusual, the band itself describes itself as a hushed and intense guitar, vocal and experimental sample based band. 27 has shared bills with artists such as Low, Karate and several similar sounding acts. The opener and title track has a rather cold and sterile atmosphere, it's a kind of trip hop, very close to Portishead. On many songs, 27 are very calm and relax and this trend finds its climax in the acoustic Devil's Play. My favourite tracks are Trouble Heart and Cavalla, two beautiful singer-songwriter folk tunes which remind me of Cat Power. The only more distorted song is called Heat Sink and this is a must for post rock purists. Even jazz fans will find a goodie while listening to Sky Walker. In general, the sound created by 27 isn't very exciting or vivid, but the constant build-up of minimalist music landscapes makes this album however something special quite different from common popular music.
