'Two Audio Vacations on one CD' is the subtitle of this debut by Butch & Jean. Subject of this spoken word CD is their imaginative hometown Shuteye, a small village in the mountains of Tennessee. As it's so tiny that you hardly can find it, they think it's easier to bring it to the listener. Jammin' Jean Callaway is the musical head behind this curious project and she's responsible for the background music (writing and playing). Wild Butch Horn is the comedian and he's responsible for most voices on the CD. It's curious that both only met in their late forties before the started playing together. Before, both were playing in some bands, but Butch mainly did comedy shows and TV commercials while Jean owned a record studio. The story behind this first CD by Butch & Jean is a portrait of fictitious characters and events in Shuteye, Tennessee. The plot is about typical farm stuff like bulls, chickens, dogs,... but there are also more general subjects like pets or food. Listening to the spoken word parts is not always easy to understand for Europeans, but nevertheless somehow curious and entertaining. CPA Convention is even a critical song about people not moving enough and getting too fat. The pure songs always cause me to push the skip button on my CD player because they are too mellow and old fashioned country tunes.
