Swiss hardcore/metal monsters Cataract saw the light of day in 1998 and have now released their third CD. The combination of those two genres surely doesn't sound too original, but Cataract had quite a lucky hand while doing so. The opener Killing Tool is a real smasher which blasts your mind away. The following song Nothing's Left isn't less powerless and again underlines the very angry side of Cataract. There are many uptempo songs on this record and I suppose that fans of bands like The Haunted, Caliban or Hatebreed will like Cataract because of the many very brutal thrash metal elements. And the closening song and title track are more than just a little tribute to Slayer. But especially the vocals are more hardcore as angry vocalist Federico Carminitana sounds a bit like the very early Henry Rollins back in old Black Flag days. Quite simple, but very typical and effective. In general, songwriting and sound are very old school like, but the entire product is so powerful and overwhelming that this doesn't disturb at all. Not a too original album, but worthwhile listening to when you like to mosh around. Two little anecdotes about this album: 1. It was produced by Tue Madsen, member of the great metal band Grope. 2. There is a limited version of this album containing a 50 minutes bonus DVD.
