INBORN - Persona
I have been following Inborn’s career from the beginning, and today it is hard to believe that this is still the same band they were in 2005 when they released their debut album. But then, unlike other bands from Luxembourg, Inborn don’t hide their past but refer to their two first albums as being recorded by the band formerly known as Inborn.
It was in 2010, with the release of their groundbreaking EP En Vogue, that it became clear to many that this band had truly an immense vision, and even though their recording sessions later that year with Ross Robinson surprised everyone, it should also be seen as the next logical step in their artistic development.
The album Persona took more than a year to be released, but finally in spring 2012, it was unleashed upon the world, and I can claim assuredly that Inborn have logically continued their evolution. Their abrasive Nineties alternative rock can still be discerned within the overall sound, but it has been expanded with so many new influences that it can easily be said that the current Inborn sound is something rather unique. There is a definite sense of futurism present. The guitars are still loud and most of the time omnipresent, but the addition of weird synthesizer sounds and intelligent programming patterns have helped the songs to transcend into what we must have thought the twenty-first century would sound like back in the Eighties.
The best production can’t of course make an album, but don’t worry, as Inborn have also worked hard on their songwriting abilities. In their early days, one might have deplored the lack of catchy moments to keep you hooked. But since their EP, this has been remedied, and now the band shows that they are also able to keep the audience’s attention throughout a longplayer.
Persona starts with a weird intro titled Mirrorscapes, before Chicago Heart Machine unveils their new and improved sound. Up next is their single Vogue. Many bands choose their most accessible piece to be played on the radio, and Inborn are no different in that regard. Except that Vogue is a perfect futuristic pop song with an unforgettable melody, haunting androgynous vocals and a really good bass line. Trash Is The New Glam was already available in a different version as a bonus download track on their EP. Two further pre-released tracks are Microfilms and Paris. This may seem a bit like a lazy move, but also makes access easier to the sometimes demanding material. Another surprise comes with Zeitgeist Orchestra, a new and improved version of the opener of their Chef d’Oeuvre album from 2007. And just like that, Inborn are able to mix elements of their past into their new direction, never ignoring what they used to be, but also emphasising that they are a band in constant progress.
Right now, Inborn are working on a new EP which should come out early next year, but until then, I suggest you check out their Ross Robinson produced Persona. While not yet being a perfect album, it comes very close. While those of you who have known the band for some time now will probably be amazed at how fast these young artists are evolving, everybody else should also be amazed and mesmerised by the modern and yet never ingratiating electro rock songs featured on this exceptional album!
