After five albums of symphonic metal with a legendary over-the-top production, it was probably high time to illustrate the success story of this Italian best-selling rock band with a Best Of compilation. Anyone reading my Power Of The Dragonflame review knows that despite feeling ill at ease with most traditional metal bands, I still admire the epic and operatic proportions of Rhapsody's music.

Tales From The Emerald Sword Saga collects three to four songs from every album, only their fourth album Rain Of A Thousand Flames is only represented by one track. The songs have been put into chronological order which shows the development from a promising newcomer act into the full fledged metal pavarottis they are now.

The music ranges from very good to great, but I still don't see the sense of this album. Apart from three songs that come in different versions, there is nothing new for the collector. Why didn't they add some unreleased stuff, maybe some live stuff and a couple of new songs? This way the compilation may only be recommended to those not yet familiar with Rhapsody. Fans probably better wait for the next album which promises to be much more interesting.
