JACOB FAURHOLT – Burn Burn Here

Half a year following his Danish language album released under the moniker Statisk Støj, Jacob Faurholt returns with his latest project Burn Burn Here. With a musical journey spanning over two decades, Faurholt has prolifically delivered more than twenty albums, EPs and singles, whether under his own name or, more recently, as Statisk Støj and his experimental alter ego Crystal Shipsss. This time, he revisits his lo-fi origins with a collection of eleven songs, all self-recorded during late-night sessions in his intimate eight-square-meter basement studio, creating an atmosphere that feels both claustrophobic and evocative. The lyrical themes of love, loss and mental health are expertly captured by Jacob Faurholt, who imbues these spontaneous recordings with raw emotion. While a few tracks feature fuller instrumentation, including drums, the majority is only performed on guitars, both acoustic and electric, as well as keyboards and piano. The initial impression of the album is one of starkness. The opener The Darkness is a sombre ballad accompanied by acoustic guitar and keyboards, with Faurholt's fragile vocals conveying a sense of despair. The subsequent Your Face Is A Storm maintains this bleak tone, with Faurholt's voice gaining a creaky quality over time, intensifying the music's hopelessness. Words Whispered From The Sand, one of the longer pieces at just over four minutes, introduces mellotron strings and piano, providing a welcome warmth after the preceding melancholy. Sad Sad Tears, the shortest piece at under two minutes, features full instrumentation, showcasing Faurholt's indie-rocking side. Brainy Advice, another indie track, reminiscent of the later works of the late Daniel Johnston, further diversifies the album. While the first half of the album, in my opinion, features the stronger material, the second half holds its own, with Heavy Eyelids standing out as a melancholic, sadcore version of a doom metal song. As is often the case with Jacob Faurholt, his songs require some time to embed themselves under your skin. Once absorbed, however, they linger, haunting you with their intimacy. These songs eschew post-production polish, shining brightest in their primal form. Faurholt has truly elevated lo-fi indie to a high art form. Burn Burn Here stands as another remarkable addition to his body of work—a beautiful, fragile, and melancholic album ideally suited for the long winter nights. |
