MEAN TO YOU – What We Could Have Been

cover

The Luxembourgish rock band Mean To You started in 2013, then split up already in 2016. A few years later, bassist Mulles decided to continue Mean To You as a solo project. In 2019, the album Electronicum I was released, which offered electronic music, so something completely different. There were still old Mean To You tracks left that were meant to be published. Instead of releasing an entire album, Mulles opted for two different EPs. Strong came out in 2021 and What We Could Have Been followed at the end of 2023.

What We Could Have Been is a bit faster and better produced than Strong. The music is a mix of alternative rock, modern metal, and a bit of metalcore. The guitar and bass riffs are groove hard, in contrast to the more mainstream choruses, which makes for too big of a contrast to my taste. This approach is reminiscent of bands like Alter Bridge, although Mean To You’s riffs are surely more brutal. In general, I have the impression that the second half of the EP is harder than the first one, with Straight Ahead probably being the hardest song on the album.

In addition to musicians from India and Turkey, Thierry Porcedda from the Atomic Rocket Seeders also contributed as a guest singer. Mulles has put a lot of effort into the two EPs, especially for the most recent one. The songs were recorded and mastered in the Wood Studio in Belgium and the Unison Studios in Luxembourg.

Although Mean To You don’t play music I’m usually listening to, I can recommend the EP What We Could Have Been, especially to fans of US-influenced alternative rock and metal which should give it a listen.
